    Well well, this sucks.

Listen I love this game, I played it everyday for the past 2 years, a long time ago, times have changed and I want to play again... but the dreaded Windows 7 rather hates Dungeon Keeper 2

    Heres what I did:

    Installed Dungeon Keeper 2
Patched it from 1.3 to 1.7
Installed 1.7 to 1.8 Unofficial Patch.
I TRIED unsafedisck, but I wouldn't need it, and it didn't work
ran in 98/me, checked: disabled visual themes and all the others, but not 650 by 840 or whatever it is, and not 256 colors.
Tried with EVERY extension, minus the nosound.
Went to the registry, had nothing changed, everything was already looking like your Windows 7 fix.

    What it does:
It flashes, Windows says it switches to 7 basic theme, which it does.
Flashes again, and crashes, no error, it just automattically closes itself with no word.

    So.... halp me?
Maybe make a video or something to make it EXACT or whatever.
    Who knows.

    Thanks.

And I ran everything in Administrator... soo...

Well, I reinstalled it, put 1.7 on it, used unsafedisk, which worked..
I still in the same problem

What I DID do to make sure is, I emptied the registry with Bullfrog, cleaned Program files.

    Still same stuff though

I tried it in Windows XP mode (Virtual Machine for 7)

    Same problem

    Halpmeh Well well, this sucks.

Ok im running on windows 7 as well and i have the game working just fine all you have to do is install the game DO NOT get the patches or the game will run in error for some reason windows 7 hates patches... just delete the ENTIRE file registry and game then redownload it as you normally would just insert the disk and let it run on its own click recommended installation and then run the game it should work just fine once it starts you may have to change the properties in Compatability to disable visual themes disable desktop compostion and disable display scaling on high dpi setteings because the game will be really dark n be sure to zoom inward once you start because i couldnt figure out for the longest time y in the world i couldnt see my dungeon heart when i started...... any concerns more get me at saulandkatarina@yahoo.com and make the subject :dungeon keeper 2 help

I tried everything on this site a few times and, while I think it helped, it didn't fix the problems I was having completely. I was able to play but it crashed if I tried to watch creatures train or in the combat pit. Finally, I found a post on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaYw-b9sZBY) that, along with the cracked file and other fixes here, seems to have it working with no crashes. Since this site seems to really be trying to help people play DK2 I figured I might as well provide the information that worked for me.

Unregistered; Aye with the availability of different setups, operating systems and configurations it's impossible to cover every possibility.

That's why every success story helps. :-)

Thank you! I tried everything else first but still had only the hand showing up/no dungeon in game. It was showing only a fraction of the graphics at the bottom. The turning off the hardware 3d from registry fixed it.

Ps. Im using the original version straight from the disk.

Hello, first off I'd like to thank the creator of the thread, it solved my DK2 problem. Now I have a question, which I just cant seem to figure out

Why can't I play as Player 2, 3 or 4 in single player? There's an abnormal lack of being able to pick the blue team on the map "Seige"

    Hello there!

1st i want to say, great job this topic, and all the others here! lovely site!

i was trying to find a solution to run my beloved game on new windows, which seemed to be not so easy task...

i absolutely disliked the suggestions about disabling all effects, sounds, runing the game on lowest resolution, with minimum shadows, etc...

my aim was to play the game on full detail, full quality, no crashes, no errors, nothing...

after few days of searching i got it! :-)

    =====
    specifications of my pc:
    ---------------------------
cpu: AMD Athlon X2 64 dualcore
    grafik: Gainward 256MB GDD3
    system: Windows 7 Ultimate
    =====
all i did was the following:
    1. instaled the prepatched DK2 to v1.7
    2. in the shortcut menu set the following options >>> http://i51.tinypic.com/908t2u.jpg <<<
    3. run the game, get to the options, and set the settings to max if you desire :-)
    4. enjoy the best game ever (if i dont count the not released DK3 )

Hi, I can't play DK2 in W7 x64 Ultimate. I tried ALL the solutions of internet (pathes, regedit, compatibiliy mode) and doesnt work. The game run, I can show the presentation movie, but black screen in the menu and game. I cant disable the 3D harware acceleration in the game. The game ignores the registry key and the menu settings, enabling always the 3D acceleration and .... black screen.

Nowadays, I can play the game in a Windows Xp embebed in a Virtual Box machine, hosted in my Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, disabling mouse integration of Vbox by Ctrl+I. I must turn on the hardware acceleration in the display driver of Vbox, and turn on the 3D harware acceleration in the game, but disabled in Windows XP (control panel, display settings, hardware acceleration off). The game works very well (sound, graphics, mouse). Eureka!! Im funny!!

Did you install on the C: drive?

I find installing any game on the c: drive causes problems.. it's always the first thing I do differently on win7/vista.

Good to hear about your results!

    Thought I'd add my story.

Windows 7 Home Premium, 1.7, installed to C:\games. Yup, you can get problems with Program Files these days (Windows hates programs that decide they should be allowed to write to their own folders in there), but the C partition isn't a problem in itself: Just steer clear of any folder Windows created and you should be right as far as permissions are concerned.

Started out with black textures, easily fixed by turning off hardware acceleration. Stuck with random crashes.

Eventually worked out that they had something to do with the dungeon heart, for eg, opening the menu by pressing escape would force a crash to desktop (CTD) if the heart area of the dungeon was even slightly on-screen, every single time. Just scrolling past it while certain other events were going on (eg combat) would also trigger CTDs on occasion.

Tried all the parameters (eg "-32biteverything"), Qmixer fixes, compatibility modes and so on. No luck. Eventually tried to lower the game resolution, and THAT solved it - so long as I've got it set to 1024x768, pressing escape will ALWAYS CTD with the heart on-screen, since lowering it to 800x600 I've not had one single hiccup.
